The Mystery of the Missing Casino
This was a comment I made in response to someone else's post, but I thought ye might find it interesting. I drive from LA to Las Vegas approximately 3 times a year. There's a town about 25 miles outside of Vegas called Jean, that as far as I can tell consists of two big hotel/casinos and nothing else. (Not to be confused with Primm, the town right at the border, which consists of three hotel/casinos, an outlet mall, a lone store on the California side selling lotto tickets, and nothing else.) Except two Vegas trips ago, I suddenly realized that Jean now consists of *one* hotel/casino. The other one had disappeared. They had torn down the enormous building, hauled away all the rubble, poured dirt over the remains and parking lot, and planted trees and desert plants. The only way we knew there used to be anything there was our memories, and the one electronic sign (turned off) that they left by the side of the freeway. I wasn't that shocked that one of the two casinos had closed down. But it was a bit weird they had erased all trace of it. I guess they thought leaving a hulking ruin would attract vagrants and liability issues. Or maybe they were following a mandate from the Nevada or Federal EPA. Or perhaps the casino on the other side of the freeway thought a hulking ruin across the way would hurt their profits and paid for the clean-up. (It's reasonably likely the two casinos had the same owner, so that would make sense.) Wikipedia says the plan was to build a master plan community on the site. But given the real estate crash, I doubt that will happen. (And Wikipedia confirms both casinos were owned by MGM Mirage, which owns a whole bunch of Vegas casinos.) Anyway, I thought that was interesting. |

ACK - Pooey , pttp pttttp ptttthh ugh! Synergy Passionberry Bliss Synergy Passionberry Bliss - organic and raw gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhg I'm only drinking it now as PENANCE. Don't ever buy this again. This review of the drink sums up my feelings on this nicely. When I read it, it seemed fine. Juice drink - 100% juice. No mention of any "energy drink" stuffs like guarana or guano or taurine. PassionBerry must mean a nice mix up for berries and passionfruit. I can dig. "Enzymes! Detoxifiers! Probiotics!" whatever.... There's stories splattering all over this bottle in different directions. It said "careful opening" when I got the white label off. I had shaken it and watched some organic things float by. It also said might ferment and have a trace amount of alcohol 0.5%. Wish I had seen that incredibly tiny writing sooner. Apparently this is a SODA. Oh pardon me: carbonated water. Either way it fizzed and I began to wonder how fermented this was. Then I took a sip. I hate carbonated water. Regular water tastes sweet next to it. I saw Elvis and the world went sideways - this drink was damn bad. I grabbed hot water, ton of sugar, a packet of Splenda to show I was still trying, and some ice. I'm making myself drink this horrible $3 concotion if only to properly traumatize myself into never buying it again. Good money says I ditch it before 2. Edit Written at 12:40. At 1:03 I dumped in, smells too much like CHEAP WINE to safely have at work. |

Sam Russo New music from the guy described as "punk folk" by rocksellout.com. Me being far gassier, I said of his stuff: "Just him and a guitar - an angrier, wittier Billy Bragg is one way to approximate his style, though that’s far from exact, and he’s a lot more original than that."
The four new ones are on the top of the player. If you haven’t heard Sam before, check out "The Dirty 13" lower down afterwards, it’s my favourite of his older stuff.
Sam Russo, ladies and gentlemen.

The Clockwork Century Clockwork Century: hub for the alternate history created by Cherie Priest for her incredibly good forthcoming novel BONESHAKER. You can also find there a novelette set in the same world, TANGLEFOOT, that’s available for free reading.

John Ostrander There’s little scarier for a writer than the idea of losing your eyesight. Perhaps you could find your way clear to adding a little help for John Ostrander, co-creator of one of the most groundbreaking comics of the Eighties, WASTELAND.

done now
Frederick has officualy ceased to impres me. It it a very small town, I'd saw about the size of camarillo, and it's public transport is laughable. The only plus side is that the #1 tea house in the entirity of maryland in located a few blocks from me. This is a must. Im just a little sad that I have none of my tea peeps here. Anyone wanna come viste DC!? you know you want to, we can get tea in frederick! I think Im having a down day. I miss familierarity and what not. on my way to work I thought i saw Todde and then later my O-chem professor...sadly this was not so, but i got so excited for 2.5 sec. I like what I'm doing and I've made friends, I just feel a little lonley. I felt like this in atlanta, but atleast there it was a huge city to distract me....not so much here. It also doesn't help that david left yesterday and so now my bed is empty :( I rolled over last night thinking the matresses were on the floor and he was next to me, only to fall off the bed. (It was a very enthusiastic and sleepy boyfriend pounce) Now I have a bruise on my elbow and knee. Let me tell you, i was very disgruntled to find cold hard floor 2 feet below the area I though was occupied by a warm and soft boyfriend.....grrrr, stupid floor. alwell, I guess I should get back to work. I have to write up 3 pages of my lit review and I have *no idea* how to organize it all. So frusterating |

Just thoughts
You'd think that countries with socialized medicine would have a much better R&D rate in the field of preventative, such as vaccines and risk factors. A disease, at least those prevalent highly contagious ones, should have a lower cost of R&D+prophylactic measure rather than the numerous balms, salves and nostrums for treatments. And that's not even including the face to face time with a doctor. Instead there is the perception that the health care industry is a gatekeeper to disease rather than an exterminator of disease. It's probably a more valid perception, especially with all of the patented drugs currently available. Why eliminate your cash cow? And when did health become political? Is it because of what we know about risk factors combining with personal biases? "Those people can just stay (sick/diseased)/die for all I care." Definitely not a statement that can be made publicly vocal anymore without repercussions, it's likely held within many hearts and minds. Some porn is just nostalgic now~ Finished DQM: Caravan Heart a while ago. Or at least got both endings. Making neat monsters and finding better riders are all that's left. Picked up Lufia for the GBA. I'm not sure how far I'll get into it this time, as I'm already sort of bored of it. Mom and my aunt are seriously starting the discussions about what will happen when grandma dies. This last week, her episodes are getting worse and so she's reacting more strongly to them. At least one of my uncles is in denial about Grandma's state, while I'm not really sure about the other three. One of the issues that they have to figure out is burial. We'd like to bury grandma with grandpa in the Philippines, and since all of mom's brothers are still living there, we'd like an open casket. Apparently shipping a corpse on an airline is quite expensive. One of my great-uncles, twenty (?) years ago, had this done and it was 30K$. We're not sure what is included in that, i.e. embalming, etc., but yeah. One of the possibilities is to send Grandma there while she's still alive, but with her state as it is, I'm not sure if a doctor would vet it. I wonder sometimes about how online things and things with passwords will be dealt with after death. Do you empower someone to go around closing your accounts and possibly notifying others of your passing? Do you just let them lapse if possible? What happens in the event of repeating payments from a bank account or on a credit card? When do those accounts close in the event of death? On notification by the government? What if you died in a manner that your death wasn't verified for years? Would those things continue in your absence or be stopped at some point? At one time, I had a piece of paper slipped into a random non-threatening book, listing all of my passwords and the like, in the event of my untimely death. I don't have anything like that at the moment, but do wonder if I should do it again. Finished reading the Something Positive archives from beginning to current over the past weekend. Stayed up until 0600 on one day to help that along too. Did sleep for about 5 hours after that though, and I am tired enough. Current Mood: tiredCurrent Music: I don't know the name of it >. |
